Antibiotic apocalypse

Beijing, China

Scientists have identified a bacterial mutation that makes bacteria resistant to colistin, a super-strong antibiotic that is only used if other treatments fail. MCR-1, as the gene has been named, was found in people and pigs in China, probably due to the overuse of colistin in cattle. For years, scientists have warned that the overuse of antibiotics will render them ineffective. Now they say that antibiotic resistance will spread and we could find ourselves back in a world where common infections will kill again.
